PERSONAL INFORMATION

ME: Tell me a little about yourself… where are you from, where did you grow up.. what was your childhood like?

MARYAM: I’m Maryam Damilola Kareem, graduated from Lagos state university, school of Agriculture, I studied Agricultural economics. Currently serving at Augustine University. I grew up in Lagos state, I’m from Lagos state, Epe precisely.

ME: Wow, I saw something interesting there, you mean you grew up, studied and even serving at Lagos state?

MARYAM: I redeployed actually and you know Lagos is the Centre of excellence, we all don’t want to leave.

Hmm…. Eko pikin

SCHOOL INFORMATION

ME: What is it like graduating as “Best Graduating Students in your Faculty” among your peers, especially from LASU known for its high academic standard and discipline?

MARYAM: Studying Agriculture was never my dream, I was in a state of dilemma when l was offered admission to study Agriculture in LASU.

After so much deliberation and conviction, I decided to go for it providing myself with two backup plans; (To write another JAMB or change to a more medical related discipline either microbiology or biochemistry).

Having that as my back up plan I proceeded to fulfilling all righteousness as to be a bonafied student of LASU.

ME: Did you buy the idea of having a role model, if yes… Who is your role model or someone that inspired you?

MARYAM: Dr. OJEDOKUN, one of my lecturers, academically he is my role MODEL. He’s a genius and he’s a very reserved person but he’s so good. He likes his own company and doesn’t interfere in what doesn’t concern him but he teaches well. Like always wanting the best for us all.

ME: How do you read, what is your reading schedule like?

MARYAM: I read anytime o, anywhere. I don’t like having burden of incomplete course, my mind would always be there. I read to my satisfaction. I can even read in a noisy place but I assimilate where it’s cool.

ME: Did you plan to be the “Best Graduating Student” from day one when you got admitted into LASU?

MARYAM: My main focus in 100level was to write another jamb so I gave it more priority to my actual course of study. I prepared so well for my jamb and I had a score way higher than the first one I took.

I was soo happy that I then believed I had a better chance of getting a more preferred discipline but unfortunately I wasn’t offered admission at all then I had to fall back on my plan B which is change of department sadly.

“As you guess, that doesn’t work out too”

I wasn’t successful with that too because the then HOD of Agric, Prof Okubena Dipeolu (May her soul keep resting in peace) refused to let me go “you will do really well in this department” she said.

At the end of it all, I found my self in Lagos State University, School of Agriculture, Epe studying Agriculture.

ME: I heard that you have an accurate GP of 5.00 in your Final Year (both 1st and 2nd semester), how did you manage achieve this?

MARYAM: 500level came with it’s own stress, this time we were to major in one of the four fields available in School of Agriculture, LASU. This courses are courses we do together but to major, we have to choose one.

As I’ve been saying earlier I don’t really like Agriculture I went for the one that’s less practical which is Agricultural Economics. I knew Economics wasn’t easy though because it’s mostly calculations and statistics and as a struggling student that I am what did I know, I’m just a striving Scholar trying to do the very best I can.

I had to doubled my efforts and as God willed with the stress, difficulties and all I had a perfect GP of 5.0 in both 1st and 2nd semester 500 level, make me sef hype myself na omo I try abeg

“All In all, I never had the mindset of going this FAR”

ME: Did you benefit from any bursary or scholarship award (s) when you were undergraduate and how did that encourage you and what is your view about such intervention(s)?

MARYAM: I didn’t benefit anything o. The Lagos state bursary I did in 100L didn’t work out that’s how I lose 200k every session. I would have retry it but the stuff is stressful for me but the money is painful though.

ME: We have more female students coming top in school, and national examinations, what do you think is the reason for this?

MARYAM: Well… maybe pressure on guys are much for money, so I think they do other stuffs aside from academics.

For me in school, there’s this guy that we are both competing to be at the top together (not physical o), I mean through grades because we are cool friends but he got carried away with balancing religion and academics so he lose it for me.

ME: Describe your five years in LASU?

MARYAM: I’m reserved and sometimes jovial to my clique. We are 3 in my clique. They are my best friend and roommates. I’m focused not necessarily struggling to be at the top but I found myself there. It wasn’t easy but thank God. I didn’t really relate with people like that but I think I’m kinda popular sha.

CAREER INFORMATION

ME: What is your advice for other students who would like to attain this success especially in School of Agriculture, how can they attain it?

MARYAM: Well in school of Agriculture, LASU presently, just remain focused, and don’t be too forward just do your thing.

ME: Some young people say education is a scam in our country, do you think so?

MARYAM: No o it’s not scam o. It’s a step stone to success.

Education brings insights nah. I’m not saying you can’t be successful being uneducated but in this 21st century education is needed mehn.

ME: After your service, what are your plans? What problems will you like to solve in life?

MARYAM: My plan is to be great o maybe not famous but rich. Also to dwell more into modern Agriculture to solve problems of food insecurity, you get, I just want to explore more in Agriculture

ME: Any particular field or aspect in mind?

MARYAM: I will be focusing on Agricultural Economics aspect
